The birth flower of August

August’s birth flower is gladiolus, also known as the sword lily due to the shape of its leaves. An ancient name of this beautiful flower was “xiphium” that means sword in Greek. It name comes from the Latin word “gladius” and represented the Roman gladiators carrying swords.

Gladioluses were imported to Europe from the South Africa in the 18th century. It is interesting to know that in Britain these incredible flowers were used in treatment and drawing.

In Ukraine gladioluses are available in July and August as they require full sunlight. They delight our eyes with variety of colors, stunning beauty and number of blooms. Another advantage of these flowers is their longevity. A bouquet of gladioluses will last for two weeks filling the room with tender aroma.

Gladioluses mean sincerity and generosity, symbolize moral integrity and strength of character. If you intend to express infatuation and to show your passion to your beloved by sending summer flowers to Ukraine, a bouquet of gladioluses will make a perfect choice.
